COMMUNITY-MINDED ORIGINS
I was born in Wilmington, North Carolina to an entrepreneur father and a schoolteacher mother, who greatly believed in giving to and being a part of the community in which we resided. My siblings and I were raised in a Christian home and our parents poured into us a value driven lifestyle. My parents stressed the need for education, which eventually led me to the completion of my Bachelors, Masters, Doctorate and PhD degrees. My move to the Triangle area was not only the catalyst that led to these degrees, but the place where I continued my desire to follow in my parents’ footsteps. There I excelled in the Human Services field, as well as involving myself in many volunteer activities. This brought me to Person County for approximately the last 25 years. Here I assisted in Drug Court activities, opened a women’s substance abuse halfway house and started a multi-cultural, non-denominational church. Since then, I’ve opened two businesses, been a member of the Chamber of Commerce, NAACP, Kiwanis Club, Ministerial Alliance, BASICS, supported Youth for Christ, Healthy Personians Advisory Board, City Board of Adjustment, AND presently serve as a City Councilman. This life of service positions me to step into the office of Mayor. A Mayor must be someone who genuinely cares for their community and demonstrates such through active involvement.
ON THE ISSUES
When it comes to the position of Mayor, leadership matters. I believe that my experience in business and other leadership roles shows that I have the leadership skills and experience necessary for this role. During my time on the City Council, I have witnessed the need for additional coordination with our County Commissioners, additional support for small business, and more opportunities for our youth. As Mayor, I will not only champion these issues, but I will also hold regularly scheduled town halls to hear other concerns that exist in the community. I also plan to hold an annual Mayor's Banquet fundraiser in support of local nonprofits.
